I noticed that the Elementor plugin on my Windows 11 PC needed to be update so I attempted to do so. The update failed multiple times. This error message was displayed.

An error occurred while updating Elementor: Could not copy file. elementor/assets/js/ai-admin.min.js

What should I do?

That error usually means WordPress can’t overwrite the existing file (permissions/ownership),or something (cache/security/malware scanner) is locking it during the update. Take a full backup before changing anything.

  • Try a clean reinstall: WP Admin → Plugins → Deactivate Elementor → Delete it (your content stays) → install fresh from Plugins → Add New. If delete fails, do it via FTP/File Manager.
  • Fix permissions on the server (not your Windows PC): folders 755, files 644, owned by the web server user. If you’re on shared hosting, ask support to reset ownership.
  • Update via WP-CLI (if available):
    Code:
    wp plugin update elementor --force
  • Temporarily disable security/caching plugins, then retry.

If it still fails, check /wp-content/upgrade/ and server error logs; hosting support can spot the exact filesystem error quickly.
