Nav Menu Items Are Bulleted Lists

When I add a nav menu and have the layout set to "Horizontal", the nav menu comes out as a bulleted list that is formatted incorrectly. I can't seem to change the format or design with any of the setting options. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
