.. any ideas what this could be from?

The only plugin I'm running that's not element or supported is wp-downloads manager .. but that has nothing to do wth my site display. all plugins are up-to-date.

Because you have used white for your menu links it's reflected in your menu drop links try giving the sub menu a background colour
