Nav Menu - hide dropdowns

Hi
I would like to hide the Nav Menu Dropdowns.

In desktop screens, the second level menu displays in a sidebar, therefore the second levels should be hidden in the main menu bar on top which displays the first level of the menu.

I tried with several css selectors display:none - but did not succeed.

I would be happy to have a css solution for this. Any ideas?
