Setting and getting font sizes of text widgets

Very new to WP and Elementor. I am building a microsite of just a couple of pages for a client.

There are a number of things that confuse me about setting and reading font sizes.

It's hard to describe (let alone believe) so I've got to show you.

Here is a text block (bordered in pink),behaving itself:

The text is an acceptable size, although I cannot tell what size that is by the widget control on the left. Presumably, it is set to some default.

I can set it to some specific value, and it behaves well:

OK so far. But now I go to another block on the same page. Same setup, a text editor inside a container. But look at the text (bordered in pink). It is much smaller than the block in my first example:

I have no way of knowing what size it actually is, the control field is empty.

Worse, when I go to resize it, not only does the text size not change but the line height line does change:

What am I doing wrong?

(Also, don't ask me why that 'stretch' popup is floating there. It's a bug.)

Are you typing in a word processor then cutting and pasting in? Some formatting often seems to be carried forward and can change what you expect.
