Hello, I am helping a friend with her WP site. She cannot access her site at the moment because she receives the following error when trying to view her site:
Fatal error: Uncaught TypeError: Argument 2 passed to WP_Translation_Controller::load_file() must be of the type string, null given, called in /home2/sitename/wp-includes/l10n.php on line 838 and defined in /home2..."
She has not updated her plugins in about 5 years, nor has she updated her WP version. She has an account through a hosting service that can get her site back online, but they state: The WordPress version was not compatible with the configurations set for it. We had to revert the WordPress version to avoid any such issue now and in future.'
Once her site was online again, we went to WP Admin and discovered her WP version was out of date. When we tried to update the version, the WP Admin closed out its window immediately. When we tried to access the WP Admin, we received the same error message as before. We cannot view her site anymore.
I'm a little uncomfortable using WP Admin at this point, because if we try to update her version or plugins, the error message appears. We then have to contact her hosting service and they bring the site back online. However, it is now offline again with the same error message. She was receiving several emails in her WP Account which stated WP Version was updating to the new version. I am thinking WP attempts to update her version, but errors out.
I do not want to lose her data. I found a piece of software that will make a copy of her website offline. I would like to use this software primarily to back up her data. Then, I would like to backup her site using her hosting service's C-Panel. I am assuming I just press the C-Panel's Backup button to backup her data. Would this be a good first approach to backup her data without losing any of her data? Then, what do you suggest? A rebuild of her website from the ground up, using her backed up data? I think she needs a complete overhaul at this point because 1) she has not updated her plugins for 5 years, and 2) her wordpress version is not compatible with the plugins, and 3) every time we try to update her plugins or WP Version through the WP Admin, we get kicked out and an error message appears. We cannot view her site anymore. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
